Alvera P. Sakemiller, 93, a long-time resident of Columbus Grove, died on Tuesday at Shawnee Manor in Lima after complications from surgery.
She was born Dec. 27, 1919 at home in Rushmore to Joseph and Dorothy Bauman.
On Feb. 8, 1938, she married Dale W. Sakemiller who passed away on Jan. 9, 2007.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas (Nancy) Sakemiller of Delphos and Craig (Linda) Sakemiller of Elida; two grandsons, Scott (Lisa) Sakemiller of Lima and Ryan (Samantha) Sakemiller of Cincinnati; and five great-grandsons, Nick, Will, Austin, Andrew and Connor Sakemiller; and a brother, Albert Bauman of Fort Wayne.
Five sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs. Sakemiller was a hardworking homemaker, loving wife, and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had a great sense of humor and a smile that could light up a room.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove, Pastor Kent Wilson officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the Memorial Service Saturday at the funeral home.

Roger J. Schlagbaum
Roger John Schlagbaum, 71, of Monte Vista, Colo., died Saturday at 4:50 p.m. MST from lung cancer and congestive heart failure.
He was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Otoville to Anthony A. “Tony” and Gertrude C. (Bendele) Schlagbaum, who preceded him in death.
On Sept, 11, 1968, he married Marina Bennett of Antwerp, who survives in Monte Vista.
Roger was raised on the family farm and graduated from Ottoville High School in May 1959. He joined the United States Navy in October 1959 and served in the submarine corps on the USS Bluegill stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the “Bluegill” patrolled the frigid Northern Pacific waters off the coast of Russia. He left the Navy in early 1964 after serving his 4 year hitch.
After they married, Roger and Marian resided first in Fort Wayne and then settled in Durango, Colo., in 1975 after spending nearly two years traveling the US in their motorhome. In Colorado, both Roger and Marian were licensed electrical contractors and in 1990, he became a state electrical inspector for the State of Colorado, first residing in Ft. Morgan and later Monte Vista. He retired in 2004 and spent his retirement in Monte Vista as a woodworking artist creating specialized wooden jewelry and ornamental boxes. Roger was also very active in and helped organize the Monte Arts Council who are planning to open the city’s first Art Center.
Suvivors also include a sister, Arlene M. (James) Herman of Kettering; four younger brothers, Donald A. (Dee Dee) Schlagbaum and Gary J. (Janice) Schlagbaum and Russell U. Schlagbaum of Ottoville and Tim A. (Cheryl) Schlagbaum of Safety Harbor, Fla.; and 14 nieces and 12 nephews.
Cremation services were carried out at Rogers Family Mortuary of Alamosa, Colo. Other arrangements are pending. The family requests no flowers and if desired, donations can be made to The Monte Arts Council of Monte Vista Colorado.

Thomas A. Minning, 93, of Delphos, passed away at 11:45 a.m. on Friday at Vancrest Healthcare of Delphos.
He was born on March 21, 1919, to Arnold and Veronica “Frannie” (Schuerman) Minning, who preceded him in death.
In 1952, he married Evelyn Hammond, who preceded him in death on Dec. 15, 1983.
Survivors include a stepson, Chuck (Chris) Hammond of Delphos; two sisters, Dorothy Warnecke of Delphos and Patricia Schmitz of Glandorf; three stepdaughters, Joan Buzard of CA, Bonnie Fairfax of Delphos and Helen Hammond of Delphos; and his special companion, Mary Mullen of Ottoville.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Siebeneck and Rita Mae Minning; a brother, Richard “Lou” Minning; and stepsons, Dave, Donald and Paul Hammond.
Mr. Minning was a truck driver for Snyder Brothers and later worked for New Delphos Manufacturing, from where he retired. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Walterick-Hemme VFW Post 3035 of Delphos. He served in the Army during World War II in the 5th Division, 10th Infantry Company D in France, where he received a Purple Heart.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. today at Harter and Schier Funeral Home with Father Melvin Verhoff officiating. Burial was held in St. John’s Cemetery with Military Grave Rights by the Delphos Veterans Council.

LaDonna Eggeman, 96, of Delphos died at 11:51 a.m. Monday at Vancrest Healthcare Center.
She was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Cloverdale to Joseph and Theresa (Becker) Brinkman, who preceded her in death.
She married Harold J. Eggeman, who died in 1979.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Deborah) Eggeman of Elida; six daughters, Carolyn (Eugene) Fischer of Delphos, Judith (Alvin) Sudhoff of Fort Recovery, Diane (John) Grothouse of Delphos, Kathy Dukes of Plantation, Fla., Linda Gerdeman of Lima and Carla (Steve) Bonifas of Delphos; a sister, Martha Bibler of Continental; and 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by seven sisters and brothers.
Mrs. Eggeman worked at Greg’s Drapery Stitch and Drapery Stitch. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and loved flowers, sewing and made beautiful draperies.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Melvin Verhoff officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ronald R. Grote, 73, of Cloverdale died at 3:25 p.m. Monday at Van Wert County Hospital, Van Wert following a two-year battle with Leukemia.
He was born April 20, 1939, in Cloverdale to Melvin and Thelma (Bracker) Grote. His father is deceased, his mother survives in Cloverdale.
On March 3, 1962 he married Marilyn Grubenhoff, who survives in Cloverdale.
Also surviving is a daughter, Linda (Stewart Mills) Grote of Van Wert; a brother, Jim Grote of Cloverdale; a sister, Judy (Robert) Brinkman of Cloverdale; and his special little buddies, Sassy and Boo.
Mr. Grote worked 14 years in maintenance for the Village of Ottoville, drove truck for J.P. Trucking for 10 years, worked as a mechanic for Mack Garage, drove truck for River Valley Distributing in Defiance for 25 years and was a farmer in partnership with B.B. and G. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville. He loved flowers, working in the yard, riding 4-Wheelers and NASCAR.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville, the Rev. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ottoville.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at Love-Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Jackson Township, where there will be a scripture service at 2 p.m.

He was born January 15, 1952, to Glen and Yvonne (Githens) Germann of rural Van Wert. They preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb 2, 2013 at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home & Crematory, Van Wert. The Rev Timothy Sims will officiate. Burial will be in Evangelical Protestant Cemetery, rural Van Wert County.

Rose Gertrude Pohlman, 98, of Delphos, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday at Sarah Jane Living Center.
She was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Landeck to Peter and Anna (Heitz) Miller, who preceded her in death.
She married Clarence “Biddy” Pohlman, who died on Dec. 3, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas (Judy) Pohlman and Ed (Betty) Pohlman of Delphos; a daughter, Mary Jo (Ted) Warnecke of Delphos; a sister, Mary Maag of Columbus Grove; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Miller-Smith, Calista Miller and Lena Miller; 10 grandchildren, Russ (Laura) Pohlman, Terry (Chris) Pohlman, Sherri (John) Wannemacher, Michelle (Magnus) Olofsson, Joe (Amy) Pohlman, Doug (Kimberly) Pohlman, Kristi (Zack) Packard, Kelly (Adam) Dunlap, Scott (Penny) Warnecke and Chad Warnecke; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Herman, Alfred, Leo, Arnold and Joe Miller; two sisters, Lillian Ellerbrock and Lucille Oberg; three sisters-in-law, Rita Miller, Katie Miller and Jean Miller; and two brothers-in-law, Rudy Ellerbock and George Oberg.
Mrs. Pohlman was a homemaker and member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Delphos Eagles Aerie 471 and CLC of Delphos. She enjoyed her vegetable garden, was an excellent baker, enjoyed making pies and especially angel food cake and her noodles were a favorite of her grandchildren. She was also an avid bingo player.

Michael W. Garber, 55, of Maples, Ind., died at 5:28 a.m. Tuesday at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
He was born March 26, 1957.
He married Mary Marquardt, who survives in Maples.
Other survivors include a daughter, Katie Garber of Beach Grove, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Kelly (Ken) Long of Fort Wayne; a stepson, Chris (Katie) Spieth of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Robert (Mary Ann) Garber of Delphos and John (Audrey) Garber of Lima; a sister, Beverly Garber of Elida; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather; and two half sisters in infancy.
Mr. Garber was director of sales for RP Wakefield Wood Manufacturing in Waterloo, Ind.

Mary E. Baxter, of Spencerville, died at 6:54 a.m. Friday at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
She was born May 1, 1930 to George and Germaine (Strayer) Suever, who preceded her in death.
On June 16, 1950, she was united in marriage to William C. Baxter who preceded her in death on July 24, 2010.
Survivors include her children; one son, William C. (Pam) Baxter II of Delphos; one daughter, Susan (Dave) Casemier of Delphos; four sisters, Jean Miller of Ada, Jane (Gene) Youngpeter of Spencerville, Shirley Strayer of Lima and Joyce (Ron) Brenneman of Delphos; one brother, Paul (Sondra) Strayer of Spencerville; four grandchildren, Wesley (Erin) Baxter, Bradley (Ashley) Baxter, Jonathon (Michelle) Casemier and Jessica (Doug) Rudasill; seven great-grandchildren, Boone and Alecta Baxter, Trace and Malin Casemier and Brayden, Lea and Ty Rudasill.
Mrs. Baxter was a volunteer and presiding judge for the Marion Township Election Board. She was also a home maker. Mary was a member of Morris Chapel Church, Elida Garden Club and Happy Hours Garden Club. She was a kind-hearted, giving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Her greatest joy was supporting her family with her love and presence. She was a gifted gardener, willing to share any of her flowers, plants and produce. She truly appreciated her time on this earth and the glory of nature and all its creatures.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend David Howell officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Rebekah Mary Wiechart, born at 10:06 p.m. on Thursday, passed away 51 minutes later at Lima Memorial Hospital. She shared those 51 precious minutes with her family. Rebekah passed from her mother’s loving arms into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior!
She was born to Matt and Linsey Wiechart, who survive in Fort Jennings.
Survivors also include a brother, Jacob Wiechart of Fort Jennings; paternal grandmother, Ann Wiechart of Fort Jennings; and maternal grandfather, Ron (Patty) Amstutz of Columbus Grove.
She was preceded in death by paternal grandfather Gary “Spike” Wiechart; and maternal grandmother, Mary Amstutz.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Van Wert, the Reverend Steve Campbell officiating.

Carolyn L. Osting, of Delphos, passed away on Sunday at 9:27 p.m. at her daughter’s residence.
She was born to Elmer and Ella (O’Neill) O’Connor, who preceded her in death.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth R. Osting on July 30, 1951 and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2011.
Survivors include her children; four sons, David (Sharon) Osting of Van Wert, Kevin (Leila) Osting of Delphos, Mark (Lisa) Osting of Kansas and Patrick (Cheri) Osting of Delphos; two daughters, Carol (Brent) Hammons of Elida and JoAnn (Garry) Stewart of Delphos; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister Joan O’Conner.
Mrs. Osting was a housewife during the time she raised her children. She later attended Apollo Career Center, graduated in 1980 with her LPN degree and worked at both the Delphos Memorial Home and Sarah Jane Living Center. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Mrs. Osting was a 1951 graduate of St. Rose High School. She loved her family very much. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with father Charles Obinwa officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

Martha F. Dickrede, 83, of Delphos, passed away at 9:15 p.m. Monday at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
She was born on Jan. 15, 1930, in Lima to Clarence and Mary (Rode) Hemker, who preceded her in death.
On Aug. 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Urban Dickrede, who passed away on April 26, 1992.
Survivors include six sons, Gene Dickrede of Delphos, Mike (Vickie) Dickrede of Elida, Tom Dickrede of Lima, Ron Dickrede of Delphos, Dan Dickrede of Ava, Mo., and Bob (Susan) Dickrede of Lima; two brothers, George Hemker of Dayton and Dick (Marilyn) Hemker of Findlay; one sister, Rosie Swick of Defiance; six grandchildren, Stacy Dickrede, Clint (Kaelyn) Dickrede, Kyle (Brittany) Dickrede, Kayla Dickrede, Aaron Dickrede and Ryan Dickrede; nine great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren, Chuck (Tressa) Mulholland and Brent (Angie) Mulholland.
Mrs. Dickrede was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Hemker; and a son, David Dickrede.
Mrs. Dickrede was a homemaker and worked as a baker for Clyde Evans. Later in her career, she worked for St. John’s Rectory. She was an active member of Delphos St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the church’s Woman’s Prayer Group. She was extremely devoted to her faith and her church community. Her hobbies included caring for her fruit trees, canning and baking. She especially loved baking angel food cakes.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with Father Chris Bohnsack officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

Roger Lawrence Kimmet, 66, of Van Wert, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
He was born in Lima to Lawrence and Bertha (Beining) Kimmet, who preceded him in death.
On May 1, 1971, he was united in marriage with Jan (McCaslin) Kimmet, who survives him in Van Wert.
Survivors also include four children, Bryan Kimmet of Kettering, Nichole (Trevor) Miller of Van Wert, Kristy (Jason) Rager of Crown Point, Ind., and Nathan (Becky) Kimmet of Van Wert; nine grandchildren, Cassie Hale of Middle Point, Dustin Hale of Van Wert, Elizabeth Rager, Carlton Rager, Davison Rager, Claire Rager and Ashton Rager all of Crown Point, Ind., and Brenna and Elise Kimmet of Van Wert; and three siblings, Patricia Williams of Lima, Gary (Pamela) Kimmet of Rochester, N.Y., and Dan (Cindy) Kimmet of Sylvania.
Mr. Kimmet worked at Aeroquip in customer service for 17 years. He also worked in IRA Accounts at First Financial for five years. He was a member of the Van Wert Lions Club and a former member of Van Wert City Pool Board and Knights of Columbus 6034.
Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Evangelical Church, Pastor Clark Williman officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.

Gerald “Jerry” E. Wallen, 74, of Delphos, passed away at 9:18 p.m. on Monday at Baton Rouge Living Center in Lima.
He was born on Aug. 24, 1938, in Lima to Henry and Ida (Smith) Wallen, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include two sons, Don Wallen Sr. of Delphos and Danny Wallen of Delphos; two daughters, Kathy Gilbert of Delphos and Jana Wallen of Lima; two brothers, Frank (Terry) Wallen of Lima and Syl (Tammy) Wallen of Columbus; five grandchildren, Karen R. Williams of Toledo, Don Wallen Jr. of Delphos, Vanessa and Sandra Wallen of Delphos, Brooke Wallen of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jeremy Wallen of Cincinnati; and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Frankie Wallen; and one daughter, Julie Wallen.
Mr. Wallen worked at Unverferth/Kill Brothers. He loved working on vehicles and he enjoyed fishing a great deal.

She was born July 1, 1970, in Van Wert, to Douglas Dean and Jenny (Rhodes) Pruden, who survive in Van Wert.
On Nov. 26, 1996, she married Robert “Bob” Ladd, who also survives in Van Wert.
Survivors also include her children, David Maxwell, Kurstie Maxwell, Evan Ladd and Bryce Ladd of Van Wert; a brother, Douglas Dean Pruden II of Van Wert; a sister, Paula Kay (John) Lemon of Angola, Ind.; and maternal grandmother, Alma Rhodes, Middle Point.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Christina Boyd.
Mrs. Ladd was a homemaker.
