Lasaro R. Vasquez, 81, of Delphos, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at his residence
He was born Dec. 17, 1930, in Bridgeport, Texas, to Hilipolito “Pete” and Mercedes (Rosales) Vasquez, who preceded him in death.
In 1955, he married Elisabeth Kramer, who died on Dec. 8, 2003.
Survivors include a son, “Peter (Jeanenne) Vasquez of Middle Point; a sister, Lucy Zink of Wapakoneta; three brothers, Adolfe “Doc” Vasquez, Frank Vasquez and Willie Vasquez of Delphos; two grandchildren, Amanda Vasquez and Patricia Vasquez; and three great-grandsons, Troy Smith, Colt Cross and Maxwell Metzner.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Ben, Raymond, Pontcho and Mitch Vasquez; and two sisters, Lola Heyser and Ernistene Metz.
Mr. Vasquez retired from the Army after 27 years of service. He was in the Korean and Vietnam wars, reaching Sergeant First Class and earning two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct medal, European Defense medal and National Defense medal for a second tour in Korea. He then worked in maintenance at Star Commonwealth for 24 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and enjoyed yard work and just being outside. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Rev. Charles Obinwa officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the Delphos Veterans Council.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, where a parish wake will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Association.
